Basic Photography Skills

Purpose:
To become familiar with basic strategies for photographing

Read the following, then find at least one image for each strategy. Post and label on your blog. Title the post, “Basic Photography Skills”.
  • Unknown
  • Simplify: Get rid of excess objects — the water bottle on the picnic table, the junky papers — that clutter up the background; make the canvas as "blank" as possible
  • .
  • Unknown
  • Close/closer: "A lot of times people take pictures too far away." Get close and closer to your subject. That doesn't mean using the zoom option; it means "Zoom with your feet."
  • Unknown
  • Angle: Be creative as you're taking your picture. Try to find an unusual angle from which to shoot. That could mean standing on a picnic table or tree stump and looking down or lying on the grass and shooting up.
  • Arjun Purkayastha

  • Rule of thirds: The best compositions are often the ones where the main subject is either in the right third or left third of the image. So shift the image that way.

  • Unknown
  • Even lighting. "You want even lighting." If there's some kind of shadow across the face, move the camera or the subject around to eliminate that. "Usually the best time to take pictures is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the lighting isn't as harsh." "Foggy days are great for taking pictures — or overcast or even rainy days."

Project that I am the most proud of

The project that I am the most proud of is the animal bowl. I am proud of myself is that I think I did a good job. I never made a clay blow before, this is my first time and I think I made it pretty good. I made a Canada Lynx bowl. This is a endanger animal in the world. It looks kind of a cat but lots of little different. I spend lots of time on catching there special features. Also it is really hard to find couple different colors and totems put together and looks good. I tried really hard on painting and coloring. And they looks great. I learned how to make a clay bowl. This a nice experience and challenge for me.

Most memorable experiences

The project that has the most memorable experiences for me is the personal space box. I create one of the most important and memorable place in my life. This is a shopping mall in Shanghai China, where I lived in china for 14 years. This mall is right beside my high school. Me and my friends used to went there everyday after school. We play there and have fine. I have some many great memories. We did a lot there and have some many great time. Every year Christmas, there will be a big Christmas tree and candy house in the mall, me and my best friends always stand in front of the candy house and take a picture in front of the candy house every year. This place grow up with me. Me and my friends keep growing looks different every year. Only the Christmas tree and the candy house never change. It really mean a lot to me. I had so many great memory with it. I tried really hard to create a box looks like that. And I think I did it, the box looks great and pretty. It is just like the place that I always went all the time. Even now I left China, left my family and friends, I will always remember and miss there. Every time when I see this personal space box I will smile, because it makes me feel all of my memories there. It is not only a artwork for me, it is a treasure for me.

Personal Space Box

Winslow Homer

The purpose of this project was to look closely at the work of Winslow Homer so that I could better understand who he is as an artist as well as learn how to describe, interpret, and evaluate works of art. In response to looking at Homer’s work, I created a relief sculpture that is inspired by his work and concepts.

Oaxacan Animal Bowl

To create a clay bowl with an endangered species subject, decorated in the style of the Oaxaca painted animal sculptures.

The Oaxacan Culture from Mexico

The Canada lynx is a North American mammal of the cat family, Felidae. With the recognised subspecies, it ranges across Canada and into Alaska as well as some parts of the northern United States. Now the population of them is going down right now because if the pollution. I choose it is because they looks beautiful and cute.

I used blue, green, white, black and purple. I use blue and white as specific color, I think they work out really well for my animal. I really like how it looks like. I probably will add some light purple if i am going to do it again.

The most interesting thing will be how to draw the feature of my animal. My animal Canada Lynx is a really beautiful animal. It is looks like a cat but still lots of diffierents between that. So it will be really hard to catch that feature and draw it pretty.

Winslow Homer Analysis: Snap the Whip 1872

Purpose:
To become familiar with Winslow Homer, a Maine artist;
To look at Homer’s work as a way to inform and inspire your work work.

                                                      Snap the Whip 1872
                                                                oil paint

There are 9 kids in a field. 7 of them are holding hands and playing the old game snap the whip. 2 of the children have fallen down and are laying on the ground. All of the children are wearing brown pants with white and grey shirt and have hats on. There Is a brown barn in the background that looks rundown and are two mountains as well that are all green and yellow. The sky is blue with some clouds and the field that the children are playing in is green and yellow with flowers in it. It is mid afternoon in the painting and the sun is shining. The colors used are mostly different shades of green with yellow orange for some of the trees and flowers. The barn in the background is completely red except for the grey roof.

The kids are the main point of interest because they are in the foreground of the painting. Also they are in the middle of a game and there is some action going on so it catches the eye. Homer draws the attention to this area by having the kids in action and putting them directly in the foreground so it is one of the first things you see.

The painting has asymmetrical balance. It is asymmetrical because there are different thing going on in each part of the painting. On the right side of the painting there are kids standing up and holding hands playing a game. While to the left there are kids who have fallen and are more people to the far left talking in conversation. There is also a large barn on the right of the painting with a tall mountain in the background while on the other side there is only a smaller mountain with not as much color.

The horizon line in this painting is in the middle ground in line with the red barn. The background looks deep in this painting because there are mountains in the background with a horizon line that is closer to the kids playing and were the main point of interest is. Because the horizon line is close to the middle ground and the point of interest it makes the painting seem deep and far away.

The mood is happy and playful. This is because the main point of interest is kids playing in a sunny field. Because of the warm colors used with the kids and the barn it makes it seem more of a joyous and peaceful setting and mood. The lines and brushstrokes used are detailed in the foreground and looser in the background. This focuses the attention to the happy children is the foreground which is a happy scene. The subject matter is of children playing and the composition is of warm colors so it helps portray the happy mood.

Because the children are playing in a field and the title of the painting is the game they are playing it shows us the warm days of summer where people would gather and children would play games. The story of the painting is that it is a warm summer day and many children have gathered to play and have fun together and enjoy the nice weather and warm days. Homer is trying to communicate that nice days like the one shown in the painting are valuable and the need to be taken advantage of like the kids playing their game.

Artists and Endangered Species

The Otter and the Moon
10''x12''
Mix Media on Bristol

Long ago when the skies were treacherous water, magnificent beasts would swim in the Night's rapids. Only when the last of the Giant Otters grasped the Moon did the waters finally begin to steady. Guided by the light of the Estra Fish, the last Otter steered the great white disk across the sky creating the cycle of Night and Day.

There is a big otter in the middle and holding  a really light moon. Around the otter there are lots of small fishes with the cloud. The back ground is a really pretty night shy with many stars. The otter is brown and cute. The moon is really bright, it is kind of shinning. The fishes and cloud are mixing together and all flying into the moon.
I think this painting is trying to tell people that we really have a such pretty living environment, and we have to protect it. We are living with lots of great animals, we need to protect them not destroying their living place. There are more and more animals extinct because of human. If we still control ourselves, the result will be really bad.

There is a big red fish in the middle of the painting. There are two parts in this painting. The up part is a cooked fish on the dish with the salt, lemon, fork, knife and napkin. In the down part it is a fish that have a fish hook in its mouth. Around the fish is the two different colors of water and the flies.
I think this painting is trying to tell us that we can't over fishing and wasting them any more. We fish too many fish, but lots of them was wasted by us. We need have a control, if we keep fishing and wasting like this. There will be plenty of different fish will extinct. We need protect them.
